HART, Terrance P. Capt. USCG (retired), 65 of Georgetown, died unexpectedly but peacefully at home on May 1, 2014 after a lifetime of service to his family, community, country and God. Terry was the Director of the Eastern Essex District Veterans Services for the past 15 years, serving the communities of Essex, Georgetown, Hamilton, Ipswich, Newbury, Rowley, Wenham and West Newbury. He was passionate about helping veterans and their survivors, and was awarded the Outstanding District Award in 2013 for Outstanding Service to the Veterans of the Eastern Essex District and to the Veterans of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Terry was a gifted speaker, participating in multiple Memorial Day and Veteran Day parades over the holiday weekends. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 194 in Hamilton, and the Massachusetts Veterans Service Officers Association. Terry was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Military Officers Association. Terry was born in Chicago, IL on August 30, 1948 to Lois (Unrath) and the late John P. Hart, career Coast Guardsman, of California. He was a 1966 graduate of Mt. Diablo High School in Concord, CA where he was student body president, ran cross-country, and played the French horn. Terry was a 1970 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, serving over 27 years in the Coast Guard before retiring in 1997. He was the beloved husband of the late Barbara M. (Haneberg) Hart. They met while he was at the Academy, were married on graduation day, and enjoyed 42 loving years of marriage before her death. While serving in the US Coast Guard, Terry was Group Commander in San Francisco, CA; Chief Operating Officer for First Coast Guard District in Boston, MA where he was the logistics coordinator for Sail Boston ’92; Director of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in New England; Operations Director in New Orleans, LA; National Law Enforcement Program Director in Washington, DC; and served for three years with Vice President George H.W. Bush on the staff of National Narcotics Border Interdiction System. He served at sea on the USCGC Flagstaff, USCGC Cape Horn, USCGC Escanaba, and sailed on the USCG Barque Eagle. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, six Coast Guard Commendation Medals, and the Finland Life Saving Medal. Terry enjoyed his community. He was a devoted member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, participating in much of their charitable work, enjoying weekly small groups, and teaching Sunday School and Youth Group for his children. Terry was an active member of the Georgetown Historical Society and Republican Town Committee. He had a love of history and politics, voraciously reading historical texts and believing in the democratic process and the right to vote. Terry was always helping at the voting polls and volunteering for campaigns he believed in. He was a soccer coach for his children, and loved going to all their sporting events – cheering them on loudly! He was a leader and Committee Chairman for Boy Scout Troop 50, proudly watching both his sons attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Terry loved large family gatherings, his neighbors, gardening, Celtic Women and playing cards. Terry is survived by his daughter Kari Richards and her husband Kevin of Peabody, son John P. Hart of Georgetown, son Kevin R. Hart and his wife Kelly of Byfield. His mother, Lois (Unrath) Hart of CA, his brother John C. Hart and wife Gayle of Oregon, brother Greg Hart and his wife Kris of Idaho, sister Carole Sanders of CA, brother James Hart and wife Renee of CA, brother Kevin M. Hart and his wife Rosemary of CA, and his brother-in-law O. Robert Haneberg and his wife Claudia of CT. He was the very proud grandfather of Matthew, Jacob and Jessica Richards, Connor and Liam Hart, and Jasmine Brunelle, and great-grandfather of Dalton Brunelle. Terry is also survived by many loving uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and colleagues. He did so much for so many, and will be sorely missed. Terry will be memorialized at a service at 10:30 AM Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Route 1 (478 Boston Street), Topsfield, MA, followed by a celebration of his life in the church multi-purpose room. All are invited to attend with the family in this remembrance. Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery where Terry and Barbara will be jointly interned, with full military honors. There will be no visiting hours.
