Fred Squires Obit

Fred Squires, CAPT, USCG, Ret

Age 56, died at his home on May 3. He is survived by his wife Jane and his children, Max, Leah, Alex and Ed. He leaves his beloved sister Sue, her husband Bill Wilson and also nieces, nephews and many loved ones. Fred grew up in McLean, VA where he was an Eagle Scout. During the summer of his high school senior year he was a ranger at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He graduated from the U. S. Coast Guard Academy in 1970, also a graduate of the U S. Naval Postgraduate School and the U. S. Naval War College. In his 30 year career he and his family have lived in and around some interesting places including: Silver Spring, MD; Arctic Ocean; Monterey, CA; New York Harbor; Kodiak, AK; Bowie, MD; Seattle, WA. Finally, after his nomadic travels, he and his family settled in Martinsburg, WV. Fred established, built and was the first Commanding Officer of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Operations Systems Center, located in Martinsburg, WV. He retired in 2000. Fred’s other activities included the Apollo Theater, Main Street Martinsburg, Board of Directors for the American Red Cross, judged science and social studies fairs and had recently taken up Beekeeping. Fred will be remembered for his relentless compassion for those he loved: family, friends and pets. Those of us fortunate enough to be acquainted with Fred will miss his outlandish sense of humor and willingness to help all those who needed assistance. Services will be held Saturday, May 8th, at 11:00 am at the Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery July 9, 2004.
